What? Perspective. It’s becoming clear to me that this word carries weight. Perhaps you’ve heard of the concept of your perception shaping your reality. Think of Henry David Thoreau as he stated ‘It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.’
I spoke to someone recently about replacing and rephrasing the words ‘I have to…’ with ‘I get to…’. Let’s unpack that a little bit. It seems these little games and twists can have an impact.
‘I have to take my daughter to her soccer game.’ Sounds like a chore, does it not?
Instead, try ‘I get to take my daughter to her soccer game.’ What a privilege! That’s probably not happening in Ukraine or Afghanistan right now, right?
‘I have to go to the dentist today’ becomes ‘I get to go to the dentist today’. That kind of self care is unlikely to be happening in many third world countries.
The possibilities are endless. There are 829 million people who go to bed hungry each night on this planet. I get to make dinner…
There is a noted movement within the mind here that shifts burden away and supplants it with opportunity or privilege. Might this little tweak help people to recalibrate the lens through which they’re viewing their day? Surely there must be other trap doors that help rearrange the mind in a way that makes the experience deeper, and more rich. After all, the mind seems to be a fairly sharp tool in creating an experience. I’ve heard it said that the mind is a useful servant, but a lousy master…meaning that eventually, by definition, our experience won’t involve the mind running the show. Until then, how can we train the mind to carve out an enjoyable or awakening experience that we’re going to have anyway? (as in you’re going to the dentist and bringing your child to soccer games regardless, so why not use it as a tool in your awakening). Try it out?!?
Do you use or can you think of additional worm-holes to alter your daily experiences? I have another fairly useful one that I’ll share soon, but I’m curious who else spends time with this concept and how they go about changing the channel within the mind. Perhaps some of these secret passageways into a happier state of being are hidden in plain sight. Let’s share the maps with our fellow seekers and space travelers..
